How To Make Recycled Pots To Grow Seedlings
Today I’m going to be making some seedling pots out of toilet rolls and egg cartons for some biodegradable pots. These pots work better then normal plastic pots as plastic pots you need to transplant the seedling when it out grows its pot but with toilet rolls or egg cartons that are made of cardboard that break down over time, the seedling has little to no transplant stress. And they don’t really cost any money because we are recycling them. So first we will start with the toilet roll.
Firstly, we have to cut the roll in halve that will give us twice the number of pots and they are easier to dig into the ground when planting the seedlings. Then we must cut 4 even slits around the toilet roll. Each cut needs to be about half of the toilet roll and then we fold each of the cuts down and interloop them with each other, so the bottom is covered in. All that is needed now is to fill the toilet roll pots with any potting mix I just used some general potting mix and lastly you need to choose what seeds you want to use.
Now its time for the egg carton which setting up is a little easier than the toilet rolls but transplanting is harder. All you have to do is cut the lid off of the egg carton and we are going to use that as to stop or reduce the amount of water that runs out of the bottom keeping the soil moister for longer. To do this put the bottom of the egg carton inside the top of the egg carton. Now just fill the egg carton with potting mix of your choice and plant some seeds of your choice. And you done with the egg carton.
Once the seedlings have sprouted and they are at the size you want them to be we will plant them into the garden. To plant the toilet rolls we want to dig a sufficient hole for the toilet roll to fit in and then we will use SeaSol on the garden bed to water them in and reduce stress. Now with the egg carton we need to cut each section off of the carton each egg slot which can take time and then we are going to SeaSol this garden bed as well if you’re putting them in the same garden bed I would wait until all the seedlings are done before you use SeaSol on the plants.
Thank you for reading until the end and please watch the video below and we will show you how we made the recycled seedling pots.
